Arthur Agnew phoned. He mentioned the calls he'd made to Mrs. K, calls she hadn't returned. He reminded her about the tax records. Informed her again, that her temporary alimony was being appealed, that it was going to be extremely difficult to get a $650 or $750 divorce settlement. He suggested to Mrs. K that it was her fault, her procrastination that put them in limbo. He revealed that Maurice was on vacation, then prodded Mrs. K to phone Mrs. Paulson.

Agnew didn't seem to hear her, when she explained that she'd phoned, and gotten nowhere with Sidney's secretary, so Mrs. K said, "I'll try again on Monday or...No, I better wait till mid week. Today isn't Monday, is it?"

Days seemed to have become like the numbers, the facts that were buzzing around in her head, looking for something to fasten onto. She hung up, asking the empty room, "What happened to the week?"
